Expansion Buses

Expansion buses or slots are standardized connections that allow the installation of devices not soldered to the motherboard, in other words, they are used to connect devices to the computer via the motherboard. They allow the flow of data between internal and external devices via the motherboard's data bus. Early computers moved data between devices and the processor at about the same speed as the processor but as processor speeds increased, the movement of data through the bus became a bottleneck. Therefore, new expansion buses needed to be developed.
